Year 5

Welcome to Year 5.

Please follow our school Facebook page to see any photographs of your child's learning.

In Y5, the teachers this year will be Mr. Pigford and Miss Blazak. We will be supported by Miss Stafford, Miss Tumelty and Mrs. Wright.

Reading

Pupils will be issued with a book from the school reading scheme and an accelerated reader book. The children can change their books as they need to, but there must be a signature from an adult in their home reading record book at least three times a week to confirm they are reading regularly.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. It will consist of one piece of English and one piece of Maths.  A list of spellings will also be given and these will be tested on a Friday.

Topics

This half term, our focus will be ‘The Tudors’ and ‘Earth & Space’. After the October holidays, we will be studying ‘Brazil’ and ‘The Properties of Materials’.

PE

PE sessions will take place on a Friday afternoon. The children will need their school indoor PE kit (blue t-shirt and shorts) and additional kit for use outdoors on these days. It will be necessary to have warmer clothing as the weather deteriorates.

Swimming

The children in Mr. Pigford’s class will be swimming every Thursday morning for the first half of the year. Miss Blazak’s class will then begin in February.

Need to know...

We are encouraging children to learn their multiplication tables in order to give themselves the best possible chance of being successful in mathematics. By the end of Y4, pupils are expected to know ALL multiplication facts to 12 x 12 by heart.  Throughout the year, we will be revising these facts.

In addition, pupils must know how to read and spell ALL of the words from the National Curriculum Y4 word list and should be developing their knowledge of words on the Y5/6 list. Both word lists and a copy of the multiplication tables can be found below.
